At 14, Cassie was easing into adolescence with a grace kids her age, and even adults, rarely possess. She is wise, loving, funny, stylish, eloquent, classy, strong, and beautiful. She is self-aware, full of integrity and mindfulness, with amazing sensitivity and intelligence.
All of these words just barely begin to describe who and what Cassie is to me. However, the things that really make my heart swell with pride, and ache with missing her,
It's how many pairs of jeans she had, and what a great shopping buddy she was. It's the cool stuff she had in her room, and her very first CD's. It's her sassy, witty, wacky sense of humor. It's the moments so hilarious we laughed until we cried, and moments so sad we cried until we laughed again. The conversations, and fights, and forgiveness that set us apart from the rest of the world, that made our relationship different from any other. It's the love. The enduring, strong, unique, beautiful love. It's the things that make us sisters.
are so much simpler.
It's her great smile and her contagious, wonderful, crazy laugh.
I don't think 14 years was enough for her, or for us, or for the entire world. However, although Cassie is not here the way I want her to be, or expected her to be, she is with me in a profound and mysterious way that I don't quite understand yet, but of which I am very sure.
Her soul is in everything we see and in all of our hearts. Her old body has gone back to the earth. So now when I see a butterfly, wildflowers, beautiful trees and bright green grass, rainbows, snowflakes, the ocean and the mountains, a bright blue sky, a starry night, the sun and the moon, I will think of Cassie and she will be with me.
