Autobiography of a Cat
by Cassie Montemurro
June 18, 1997
I am
a cat. My name is Beets. All my life I've lived with a human family and other
animals. In 1982 my sister, Rosie, and I were adopted. Already in the family
was a large white cat named Fluffy. The three of us got along just fine.In 1983 there were some additions to the family. Rosie had kittens! Oh, I loved my new nieces and nephews! A shame we only got to keep one little girl-cat named Hurricane.
Later on in the year there was another addition. The human family had another girl. Her name was Cassie.
In 1984 the human family adopted yet another cat. He was the kitten of one of my nephews. His name was Max. Poor Max had so many health problems, he only lasted until 1986.
1989 was one of the most traumatic years of my life. My human family and I moved. I liked the new house but it was a big adjustment. My niece, Hurricane, died that year, too. The very worst part of that year was Dog. Chloe. She was a little black puppy, no bigger than I, bullying me away from my food!
As time went by I got used to the new house. Fluffy was gone, but I liked my new companion Kate. Kate was a young grey cat from the old house. The humans had adopted him. The first week of his living with us, he gave us a scare. As we were moving Kate disappeared. When he finally turned up, he was lazily lounging on moving boxes in the moving van.
The dog and I got used to each other, but still -- she was intolerable. The second dog, Bono, arrived in 1993. I didn't like him, either, but he didn't strike the same terror in my heart as Chloe.
In 1994 I lost my dear sister but gained two little companions. Bootsie, who looks almost exactly like me, and Simon, who looks like Rosie. The next year Bootsie had three babies. One, Bits, looked like her. Another, Scholar, looked like Simon. The last, Maude (whom the humans kept), was a mish-mosh of colors.
The next, and last, baby cat (by 1995 they all were babies to me!) in my life was Chicken Soup. Chicken really reminded me of myself when I was young.
So those are all the people -- or cats -- in my life. I died in 1996. My humans were very sad, but I wasn't. I had a full fourteen years. I had many great people and animals in my life.
